Erwin and the Origins Experience
Some of us are going through a dvd series by Erwin McManus about the future of the church and postmodernity. It talks about going beyond imitating established ministries to discovering one’s own uniqueness. Innovation. Anyway here are some of my thoughts from it.
-I like the story of the Chinese girl who wasn’t “converted by information”but rather through experience and love. This idea is not totally new though I think it’s becoming even more important and suitable as the church moves forward.
-He had some good points regarding hope and how if a church remains “status quo” or is a follower, then it may not be able to effectively reach out and target the desires and hopes of people. I think the Project is a great example of a church trying to be leading edge and innovating, not adapters or followers. And speaking from Erwin’s point of view, if this “project” or new idea doesn’t succeed, who says that the church always needs to succeed/survive instead of closing or changing its model again? All about finding the right mushrooms!!! Some may kill you but in order to find the portabellos you may need to try a poisonous one.
-From the brief description Erwin gave of how his church operates, I wander how they can put on other ministries throughout the week if they don’t even have a church building. Looking a Beulah, I don’t know how all the ministries would survive if the building wasn’t in place. And all the ministries are such an integral part of the church.Maybe Mosaic’s situation and ministry is a whole lot different.
